Crusaders Out-Shoot, But Can't Outscore

DeSales Steals 1-0 Win

BOX SCORE

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2012) - Alvernia University (6-2-1) ripped off 25 shots with 11 on net to just 11 total for DeSales University (4-4-1), but the Bulldogs had the one that mattered in a 1-0 win Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Schlager Memorial Field.

DSU keeper Alex Bastinelli made 10 saves in net and got help from her defensive line clearing another shot off the line to record the shutouts.  Taylor Batcsics scored her second goal of the season in the 76th minute for the lone tally of the day.

Alvernia had four shots over the first nine minutes, the best opportunity off the right foot of Bridget Verdel (Hamilton Square, N.J./Notre Dame) that hit Bastinelli right in the numbers.  Senior Rachel Gimber (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had a chance in the series that just missed the left post.  The Crusaders finished the first half with a 10-1 advantage in shots, but the score remained tied at 0-0 thanks to five saves from Bastinelli.

Verdel had another chance early in the second half on a semi-breakaway.  Her initial shot carmoed back off Bastinelli and Verdel tried to punch in the rebound, but a hustling Bulldog defender kept it scoreless.

DeSales drew its third corner of the game in the 76th minute and Ariel Merkt hit a cross that Batcsics finished for the 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders came back with five shots over the final 15 minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net.  Alvernia keeper Colleen Maher (Wall, N.J./Wall Township)

Alvernia will continue the non-conference schedule Tuesday hosting Penn State-Berks at 7:00 p.m.
