Reading, Pa. (Sept. 29, 2012) - Alvernia University (8-8) split a pair of volleyball matches at the PSU-Berks Tri-Match Saturday morning losing 3-1 to the host Lions (7-7) before knocking off Cedar Crest (7-7) by a 3-1 final.
Sophomore
Liz Newman (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) led the way for the Crusaders with 20 total kills. She had just five total kills in the opening match then came back with 15 kills in the win over Cedar Crest.
Kristen Rupp (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had 11 kills in the opener and six in the second match.
Tori Beck (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) totaled 72 assists over two matches.
The Crusaders dropped the first two sets of the day to PSU-Berks before responding with a 25-18 win in the third set. The Lions closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. The roles reversed for the second set with Alvernia taking a 2-0 lead before Cedar Crest extended the match with a 25-20 win in the third set. This time the Crusaders finished it with a 25-21 win.
Alvernia will head to Lycoming on Tuesday for a Commonwealth Conference match with the Warriors and host a MAC crossover quad-match next Saturday.
