Reading, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2012) - Alvernia University (1-4, 0-1) pushed the four-time defending conference champions to the brink in the opener set before falling to Lebanon Valley (2-2, 1-0) 3-0 Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's volleyball action at the Physical Education Center.
Lebanon Valley broke a 15-all tie in the first set with a 7-2 run to pull ahead 22-17, but Alvernia closed to within a point scoring five of the next six points. The teams then traded points until the Dutchmen finished off a 25-23 win in the opener. LVC took an early lead in the second set winning by a more comfortable 25-16 margin then cruised to a 25-8 win in the final set.
Alvernia got 18 assists from senior setter
Tori Beck (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown). She also totaled 11 digs.
Liz Newman (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) led the team with eight kills and
Toni Maurer (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had 15 digs.
LVC had three players with eight or more kills led by Kayla Confer with nine.
The Crusaders continue the season this Saturday at the Gwynedd-Mercy Tri-match. They return to conference action in two weeks hosting Albright.
