Margaret Wentzel (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) scored five goals as Alvernia University (8-6, 1-4) defeated Hood College (3-11, 0-5) by a 9-0 final Saturday morning in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
After an unassisted goal from
Natalie Messaros (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) in the 10th minute, Wentzel scored three straight for the Crusaders, the first unassisted and the next two on deflected passes from
Kyle Dillman (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Melanie Lowry (Gap, Pa./Octorara).
Alexis Krall (Annville, Pa./Annville Cleona) scored her second goal of the season to give the Crusaders a 5-0 lead eight minutes into the second half. Wentzel then added two more goals over the next four minutes. Messarose added her second of the game in the 53rd minute and Krall closed the scoring with just over 10 minutes to play.
Junior goalie
Erin Wunsch played 44 minutes without facing a shot and
Misty Cox (Richland, Pa./Conrad Weiser) turned away the one shot she faced.
Wentzel's five goals are the most in a game since Megan Novogratz scored six in a win over Hood in 2003.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule hosting Albright College on Wednesday evening.
