Reading, Pa (October 29, 2013) - Alvernia University (11-6-2, 3-4-1) took down crosstown rival Albright College (7-8-2, 3-4-1) by a score of 4-1 in a Commonwealth Conference women's soccer match Tuesday night at Alvernia.Â
The Crusaders came out strong, with
Hannah Mallets (O'Fallon, Ill/ Mechanicsburg) scoring her third goal of the season off a corner kick from
Bridget Verdel (Hamilton Square, NJ/ Notre Dame) and an assist from
Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa/ State College) in the 24th minute.Â
After the half, Alvernia's
Laura Mauroschadt (Reading, Pa/ Muhlenberg) scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from
Bri McGrath (Sicklersville, NJ/ Winslow) in the 57th minute. Alvernia allowed its only shot on goal off a successful penalty kick in the 71st minute. The Crusaders shut down the Lions the rest of the game.
Alvernia sealed the win off an unassisted goal from McGrath in the 72nd minute and a breakaway goal by Verdel with just seconds remaining.
The win keeps Alvernia's playoff hopes alive. The Crusaders need a win against Stevenson University on Saturday, November 2, and an Arcadia win against LVC.
The next home game for the Crusaders is Saturday, November 2 at 12:30 p.m. against Stevenson University.
