Crusaders Sweep Doubleheader At Messiah

Becker-Menditto Wins Opener In Relief, Price Takes Game Two

Grantham, Pa. (Mar. 23, 2013) - Senior Chris Ray (Exton, Pa./Henderson) drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of game one and sophomore Steve Price (Barto, Pa./Boyertown) threw a complete game, four-hitter in game two as Alvernia University (11-5, 4-2) swept a doubleheader at Messiah College (4-10, 1-2) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference baseball action.

The wins moved Alvernia head coach Yogi Lutz two within two wins of 700 for his career.  The Crusaders are at Rowan on Tuesday then host The College of New Jersey Wednesday and Widener on Thursday.

Ray delivered a ground ball with one out at the bases loaded that the Messiah second baseman couldn't handle and a pair of runs scored.  Both teams had scored two runs in the first and went scoreless until Ray's grounder in the seventh.  Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) threw an inning and two thirds in relief to pick up his third win of the season.

Mike Weinhold (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) went five and a third innings and gave up two runs on four hits.

In game two, Price scattered four hits and gave up just a single run in the third.  Alvernia scored a run in the first and four more in the third to lead 5-0 before Messiah got on the board.

Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) was 2-for-4 in the opener with two runs scored and Dustin Arnold (Annville, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) was 3-for-4 in game two.
