Maher Collects 10th Shutout

BOX SCORE

Gettysburg, Pa. (Aug. 30, 2013) - Alvernia University (1-0) got a goal apiece from Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) and Jess Bernd (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley), and a pair of saves from Colleen Maher (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) in a 2-0 win over Manchester University (0-1) Friday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Gettysburg College.

The Crusaders dominated statistically for the first half outshooting Manchester 11-2, but couldn't put a goal on the board until five minutes into the second half when Gill struck from 30 yards out on a well-struck ball that found the upper corner.  It was the 14th tally in her career moving her one goal away from a tie for fourth place on the career scoring list at Alvernia.

A pair of first-year players hooked up on the second goal with Bailey Stover (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) serving a cross to Bernd in the 73rd minute who turned and volleyed a shot into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Maher wasn't really tested in her two saves, but did record her 10th career shutout.  She sits three behind the career leader Kirsten Kelley (2007-10) on the all-time list.

The Crusaders face a stern test in Grove City College on Saturday at Day Two of the Gettysburg Cup.  Grove City dropped a 2-1 decision to the host Bullets who are picked to finish second in the Centennial Conference.
