OT Goal Leads Crusaders Past Misericordia, 2-1

Wentzel Scores First Goal In Extra Period

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2013) - Freshman Margaret Wentzel (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) scored her first career goal just over a minute into overtime giving Alvernia University (2-2) a 2-1 win over Misericordia University (1-4) Tuesday evening in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.

The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead on a fast break goal when Wentzel set up fellow freshman Alexis Klopp (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken) with five minutes left in the first half.  The Cougars tied it at 1-all seven minutes into the second half on the third goal of the season for Jenn O'Neill.

Alvernia held a decided 19-4 advantage in shots during regulation and scored on its first shot in overtime.  Senior Kyle Dillman (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) took a pass on a penalty corner and pushed it forward to Wentzel for the game-winner.

Junior goalie Erin Wunsch (West Lawn, Pa./Wilson) made three saves in net for the Crusaders.  Misericordia goalie Angela Pasquini made 10 saves in net for the Cougars.

Alvernia has three more non-conference games before opening the Commonwealth schedule at preseason favorite Messiah on September 28.  The Crusaders host Gwynedd-Mercy College this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
