Margaret Wentzel scored her 13th goal of the season and Alvernia University defeated Hood College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference field hockey action at Hood.
Wentzel ripped home an unassisted tally just inside the far post in the 14th minute of the game. Alvernia totaled 11 penalty corners in the first half and racked up 19 shots, but Hood goalie Jessica Sedgwick made eight saves over the first 35 minutes and allowed just the one goal to Wentzel.
Hood mustered a pair of shots in the second half, but neither was on target. The Blazers also recorded a defensive save late in the game to keep the Crusaders within a goal.
Erin Wunsch recorded the shutout for the Crusaders.
Alvernia heads to York College for a non-conference game on Tuesday before returning to the conference schedule hosting Stevenson next Saturday.
