Reading, Pa. (Oct. 14, 2014) - Alvernia University (8-5-1, 2-1) recorded its seventh shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over crosstown rival Albright College (6-8-1, 1-3) Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action at Shirk Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Crusaders got on the board in the 53rd minute when
Alex Martyn netted a half-volley assisted by
Josh Wollaston. The Crusaders made it 2-0 when senior
Joe Raymond made a move to elude a defender in the box and fired a left-footed shot off the hand of a diving keeper and just inside the far post.
The Crusaders held a 19-7 advantage in shots and Albright keeper David Oram made a number of point blank saves over the final 15 minutes to keep the Lions within two.
Zach Rider posted his sixth shutout of the season making three saves, and is within two saves of the single season record held by Richard Kessler (2006).
Alvernia returns home for homecoming weekend to host Lebanon Valley College on Saturday.
