Reading, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2014) - A second half goal for Lebanon Valley College (5-7-2) led to a 1-1 tie with Alvernia University (8-5-1) as both team fell short on overtime attempts Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's soccer action.
Devin Wilt netted the Crusaders first goal in the 42
nd minute. Off a long, arched through-ball by
Sam Hart down the center of the field, Wilt took on Dutchmen goalie Cam Avery one-on-one. Wilt popped the ball over Avery, leaving himself an open net for his third goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.
Alvernia held the lead through most of the second half, until Lebanon Valley put in the equalizer in the 81
st minute off a rebound. Â Crusader goalie
Zach Rider blocked a rocket shot from the left post, putting Tyler Skye in position to drive the deflection the top right corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.
Both teams combined for three shots in the first overtime. The Crusaders ripped two shots within the first two minutes, both wide of the goal, while the Dutchmen had one shot, which also missed wide.
Lebanon Valley found its best opportunity in the second overtime. In the 105
th minute Curtis Washburn was sent in on a one-on-one opportunity with Rider, but he missed a shot wide left. Alvernia found its chance to capitalize on the miscue two minutes later as the Crusaders crashed LVC's net. After multiple passes in front of the goal,
Shawn Laskey missed a close shot just over the crossbar.
Rider had three saves on the day, picking up his second draw of the season.
Alvernia continues conference play on Wednesday, travel to Arcadia for a 7:00 start.
