Williamsport, Pa. (Oct. 14, 2014) - Lycoming College (14-12, 3-2) held off Alvernia University (6-9, 1-4) in a 3-2 win Tuesday evening in Commonwealth Conference volleyball action at Lycoming.
The host Warriors took the opening set 25-14, but Alvernia stromed back to take the second set 25-23 and won the third 28-26 for a 2-1 lead in the match. Lycoming was able to level the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set and took the match with a 15-11 win in the third set.
McKenna Achenbach had a big kill for the Crusaders to break a 22-all tie in the second set and the guests went up 24-22 on a Lycoming ball handling error. Lycoming pulled back within a point at 24-23, but
Kristen Sipling ended the match with a kill from
Jamie Morris.
The third set was tight throughout and once the Crusaders knotted the score at 21-all on an assisted block by Achenbach and Sipling, neither team held a two-point lead until Newman burried a kill from Morris for the 28-26 win.
Lycoming jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth set and kept a comfortable margin. The Warriors went up 8-4 in the fifth set, but saw Alvernia come all the way back to level the score at 10-all before a run of three straight points for Lycoming put it ahead to stay.
Alvernia returns home to host Widener University for a Commonwealth match next Wednesday.
