Reading, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2014) - Sophomore
Margaret Wentzel scored with under two minutes left in regulation, but Stevenson University (10-6, 2-2) answered back with the game-winner in the fourth minute of overtime for a 3-2 win over Alvernia University (8-7, 2-2) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference field hocked action at Alvernia.
The Mustangs opened the scoring on a corner play in the 23rd minute when Caitlin Dempsey deflected a blast on a corner play over Alvernia goalie
Erin Wunsch. The Crusaders were able to knot the score at 1-1 just before halftime when
Melanie Lowry scored on a corner play for the Crusaders assisted by
Summer Liberto.
The Mustangs reestablished the one-goal lead 20 minutes into the second half on a goal by Alison Kagel, but once again the Crusaders came back to tie the score.
With under two minutes to play, Alvernia inserted a corner to
Natalie Messaros who ripped a shot from the top toward the left post. Wentzel was crashing the cage on the play and stuck out her stick to send a defelction up and over the Mustangs' goalie.
Wentzel had a breakaway opportunity early in the extra period, but couldn't quite slot the shot under a sliding goalie. The Mustangs countered and after a tremendous lunging save from Wunsch, Holli Eppley stole the ball on the wing and found Kagel in front of the cage and the senior was able to lift the ball over Wunsch and into the net for the winner.
Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Albright College for an important conference match-up with the Lions.
