Chester, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2014) - Alvernia University (11-7, 5-2) locked in its spot in the MAC Commonwealth Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over Widener University (4-12, 1-6) Tuesday evening at Widener.
The Crusaders used an early second-half goal to take the 1-0 advantage. While Widener goalie Mikayla Ninos made back-to-back saves on shots by
Margaret Wentzel, Ninos did not clear Wentzel's second attempt far enough. Just two minutes into the half,
Summer Liberto found the loose ball in front of the net and drove in her sixth goal of the season.
Liberto's goal is all Alvernia would need, as the Crusaders defense did not allow a shot from the Pride all game.
Alvernia holds a 5-2 record in the conference, earning them a spot in the Commonwealth Conference tournament. The Crusaders enter the tournament as the #2-seed and will host the #3-seed Lebanon Valley College in the semi-finals on November 5th with the time to be determined. The Crusaders blanked the Dutchmen during regular season play this past weekend, 4-0.
Alvernia will conclude its regular season schedule this weekend with Senior Day, hosting Cabrini College on Saturday morning.
