BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (Nov. 12, 2014) - Alvernia University (11-8-3) topped Swarthmore University (9-6-4) in penalty kicks 4-3 Wednesday night to advance to the ECAC semifinals on Saturday.
The first three shooters for both teams converted their shots, keeping penalty kicks tied 3-3.
Zach Rider opened the window of opportunity for the Crusaders on the 4th shot, making a diving block to his left off Swarthmore's David Geschwind.
Cody Shirk brought Alvernia a step closer to victory, launching his attempt to the lower right corner of the goal for the 4-3 advantage. Rider then locked up the win with another save to his right on Swarthmore's final shot.
The Crusaders fell behind 1-0 early in the second half when Swarthmore's Michael Stewart went high center just out of the reach of Rider.
Alvernia pushed back though, tying the game 1-1 in the 74th minute.
Josh Wollaston found the lower left corner for his seventh goal of the season off the feed from
Alex Martyn.
Both teams remained scoreless through the first and second overtimes.
WIth the win, the Crusaders advance to the ECAC semifinals on Saturday. Alvernia will host Penn State-Harrisburg at 11:00 am on the Alvernia Turf Field.
