Baltimore, Md. (Nov. 19, 2014) – Senior
Harrison Deyo scored a game-high 22 points to lead Alvernia University (2-1) to a 63-59 win over Johns Hopkins University (2-1) Wednesday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
Deyo scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half going 5-for-6 from the floor after the break, and knocked down 1-of-2 free throws with nine seconds to go giving Alvernia the late, two-possession cushion.
Hopkins had a look at a 3 with three seconds to go that would have cut the gap to one, but the shot was off the mark. The Blue Jays hit just 3-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Crusaders were 4-for-13 from the arc, but hit 2-of-4 in the second half.
Hopkins' first half lead was as many as six points on two occasions and it settled for a two-point lead at halftime, 29-27.
The second half lead was six points for Hopkins with 14:20 to play, 43-37, before a layup from Deyo and back-to-back buckets in the paint from
Alex Shippen forged a tie at 43-all.
Shippen knocked down one of the Crusaders' two second-half 3s on the next possession then the guests got a layup from
Lamont Clark and a pair of free throws from Deyo to cap a 13-0 run putting Alvernia up 50-43.
The Jays went 0-for-4 from the floor with a turnover during the Alvernia run with all four attempts coming from beyond the arc.
Omar Randle hit a jumper to snap the scoreless streak for Hopkins and start a run of six straight for a 50-49 game with just under eight to go.
Deyo broke a 54-all tie with two free throws and the Crusaders went up five as the Jays went cold from the floor again. The lead could have been more, but Alvernia went three straight trips hitting just 1-of-2 free throws.
Hopkins cut it to one possession with two free throws with 58 seconds left, but Deyo answered with a nice finish at the rim after a feed from a driving
Charles Cooper. The Jays cut the gap to two points on the next possession with a three-point play, but missed a layup in front of the last Deyo free throw and the 3 in the final possession.
Clark finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Shippen pitched in with 12 points and three assists. Hopkins put three players in double figures led by 14 from Jimmy Hammer.
Alvernia opens the home and conference schedules on Saturday when it hosts Lycoming College for a doubleheader. The Warriors enter at 1-2 off a 91-71 loss at Susquehanna on Tuesday.
