Hackettstown, N.J. (Aug. 29, 2014) - Centenary College (1-0) tallied the only goal of the game late in the first half of a 1-0 win over Alvernia University (0-2) Friday afternoon at the Centenary Classic, a season-opening women's soccer tournament hosted by the Cyclones.
The Cyclones built up an offensive charge in the 41st minute of play that resulted in a shot from Becky Camp that was cleared off the line by the Crusaders' defense. Centenary collected the rebound and Gabriella Kramer returned the ball to Camp who buried her second chance.
"We entered the opening weekend with a lineup that included eight new starters from last year and facing back to back teams that were pre-season top three picks in their respective conferences," said Alvernia head coach
Bill Bonewitz. "We knew that with a young team, this opening weekend could be a learning experience."
In Friday's opening match with Centenary the Crusaders began with nerves but began to settle down as the game progressed. Alvernia was able to put pressure on Centenary's keeper firing off seven shots with six on net and the other off the crossbar.
The second half was evenly contested but the Crusaders could not come up with the equalizer. Both Centenary keeper Meghan Williams and Crusader goalie Jess Plunkett finished the match with five saves apiece.
Alvernia advances to the consolation game against Drew on Saturday.
