Reading, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2014) - Eastern University (3-3) scored twice in each half of a 4-3 win over Alvernia University (2-4) Wednesday evening in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
Alvernia opened the scoring in the 22nd minute on the first of two goals from sophomore
Margaret Wentzel. She made a one-on-one move across the front of the Eastern cage and dropped a low shot back to the near post for the game's opening goal.
Eastern answered with goals in the 25th and 34th minutes to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The Eagles forged a 2-goal lead just four minutes into the second half, but Wentzel answered to close the gap back to one just three minutes later. Once again she carried the ball into the circle. This time the Eastern goalie was up to the task on the first shot, but Wentzel stuck with the play and scored on the rebound.
Eastern went back up by two goals on a corner play in the 52nd minute and held that lead into the final minute of play when Alvernia was awarded a penalty stroke following an offensive rush.
Emily Kelly drove the stroke into the netting for a 4-3 score, and Eastern was able to keep the play in the midfield for the final 40 seconds.
Alvernia continues the non-conference schedule on Saturday hosting Wilkes University.
