Reading, Pa. (Sept. 20, 2014) - Sophomore
Margaret Wentzel carried the ball over 50 yards and beat the goalie 1-on-1 to give Alvernia University (3-4) a 3-2 overtime win over Wilkes University (1-4-1) Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
Tied 2-2 in overtime, the Crusaders capitalized on a Wilkes corner to pull out the win. In the 72
nd minute, Alvernia goalie
Erin Wunsch saved two consecutive shots to keep the Crusaders' hopes alive. On the latter,
Natalie Messaros picked up the deflection from Wunsch and cleared the ball out to Wentzel. Wentzel then dribbled down the field, taking on the Colonials' goalie Lauren Burrows. On the challenge, Wentzel pulled right to go around Burrows and notched her seventh goal of the season. Â
Alvernia opened and closed the scoring on the day. In the 11
th minute, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead as
Amanda Galanti set up
Lauren Jacobsen for her first goal of the season. The Colonials attempted to answer within the half, but Wunsch had six saves to preserve Alvernia's lead into halftime.
Wilkes was able to respond on the back end, however, picking up goals in the 55
th and 62
nd minutes against Crusader goalie
Rebecca Brosious to take the 2-1 advantage. Messaros didn't let the Colonials enjoy their lead for long, squaring things up 2-2 less than a minute later as she found the ball amongst a scuffle in the front of the net and pushed it into the back of the goal.
Alvernia, which has collected two overtime wins this season, continues non-conference action on Tuesday as it hosts Richard Stockton College at 7:00 pm.
