Reading, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2014) – Alvernia University (4-4) notched three first half goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Richard Stockton College (4-3) Tuesday night on the Alvernia Turf Field.
The Crusaders dominated the offense in the first half, out-shooting the Osprey 11- 1.
Margaret Wentzel and
Emily Kelly ignited the scoring, pairing up to get the Crusaders on the board. In the 4th minute, Kelly pushed the feed to Wentzel, who launched the ball to the back of the goal for a 1-0 lead. Wentzel struck again later in the half, increasing Alvernia's lead as she pulled left in front of Stockton goalie Liz Stankiewicz for her ninth goal of the season.
Kelly added extra insurance for the Crusaders before the half, this time picking up a goal of her own.
Natalie Messaros drove the set up across the circle, finding Kelly for the 3-0 lead.
Alvernia did not settle, netting their fourth goal of the night in the 65th minute. Wentzel was good for the assist this time, using a short pass off the right post to square up
Summer Liberto for her fourth goal of the season.
The Osprey netted a goal late in the second half, but the Crusaders held steady to their lead.
Goalie
Erin Wunsch had three saves on the night as Alvernia won its second straight home game.
The Crusaders look to extend their streak on Saturday as they host Arcadia University at 11:00 am in their first Commonwealth Conference matchup of the year.
