Reading, Pa. (Sept. 27, 2014) –For the second time in a row, sophomore
Margaret Wentzel scored the game-winning, overtime goal as Alvernia University (5-4, 1-0) claimed a 3-2 victory over Arcadia University (6-4,0-1) in Commonwealth Conference Action on the Alvernia Turf Field Saturday afternoon.
Wentzel's game winner came just a minute and half into overtime. With support around the goal, Wentzel lifted the feed from
Natalie Messaros past Arcadia goalie Brittany Hodson and into the back of the net. There were only two shots taken in overtime, both by Alvernia.
Arcadia broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a goal in the 40
th minute. The Knights went up 2-1 as Rachel Longenecker's shot was just out of the reach of goalie Erin Wunch's slide. The Crusaders, who had just four shots in the second half, refused to be defeated and capitalized in the 62
nd minute as
Hailey Knowlton used back-to-back shots to tie the game 2-2. Knowlton found her own rebound off Hodson's pads and knocked in the equalizer.
The Crusaders came from behind in the first half as well, answering Arcadia's early 1-0 lead which came by way of a 19
th minute drive off a corner. The tying goal came less than three minutes later as Wentzel broke away from her defender and beat Arcadia's shifting defense by finding Knowlton in the middle of the circle. Knowlton drove the first of her two goals on the day into the middle of the cage to square the game up 1-1.
Wunsch had a stellar game in goal, including a stand at the end of the second half which included seven saves within three minutes, as Arcadia got off a shot on each of seven consecutive corners.
Alvernia returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Delaware Valley for a non-conference game starting at 4:00 pm.
