Carlisle, Pa. (Sept. 17, 2014) - Dickinson College (6-0), ranked fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, scored twice in the second half for a 2-0 win over Alvernia University (4-4) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Dickinson.
The Crusaders entered the game with the intent of making it tough for the Red Devils offense to possess into the box, and looking to break through on counter opportunities.
"Went up against a highly talented Dickinson team that deserves its #4 regional ranking," said Alvernia head coach
Bill Bonewitz. "We executed the defensive game plan pretty well, with just a pair of mental lapses and they capitalized."
Dickinson had 19 shots in the opening half with just eight on net and freshman Jess Plunkett stopped them all. The Red Devils got on the board in the 57th minute when a long pass from the midfield found Nicole Fronsdahl inside the 18 and she finished her first goal of the season. They added insurance late with a goal from Andrea Caya in the 85th minute.
Â
"
Kristen Eckert had a terrific game," said Bonewitz. "She was assigned to their top player and pretty well held her in check. And Jess Plunkett played a very nice game in net including an excellent save on a penalty kick."
Â
Plunkett finished the game with 13 saves, and made the save on the penalty kick in the 74th minute keeping the Crusaders within a goal.
Â
"I'm proud of the effort," finished Bonewitz. "It's another good sign for a young team."
Alvernia continues the schedule next Wednesday at Ursinus.
