Glenside, Pa. (Sept. 24, 2014) - Alvernia University (4-5, 1-2) needed a close-faught, 25-23 win in the fourth set to force a fifth set, then pounded out an impressive 15-7 win in the deciding set for a 3-2 win over Arcadia University (6-5, 1-2) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference volleyball action at Arcadia.
The teams ended up alternating sets with Arcadia taking the opener 25-20. Alvernia answered with a 25-16 win in the second set to level the match and Arcadia responded with a 25-21 win in the third set.
Alvernia jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set and held the advantage at two points or better for the remainder of the set. Senior
Liz Newman had a key block late in the set that gave the Crusaders a 24-21 lead then
Kristen Sipling ended match with a kill.
Newman finished the night with a team-best 21 kills and Sipling added a dozen.
Alvernia opened the fifth set with a side out on a Newman kill then ran off six straight points on the serve of Megan Achenbach including three service aces. Another Newman kill ended the run with the Crusaders up 7-0. Arcadia was able to get within five points just once the rest of the shortened set.
Alvernia returns home to host a tri-match with Immaculata and Penn State-Berks this Saturday.
