Reading, Pa. (Sept. 27, 2014) - Alvernia University (5-6) split a pair of matches at its own volleyball tri-match Saturday, dropping the morning match, 3-0, to Penn State-Berks (7-5) before knocking off Immaculata University (10-4) in the afternoon.
Berks went 2-0 on the day defeating Immaculata, 3-1, in the middle match.
Alvernia played three close sets in the loss to Berks dropping the three 21-19-21, and got a team-high 11 kills from freshman
Kristen Sipling in the opener and had three players in double figures in digs led by
Teresa Zavala who totaled 14.
The Crusaders opened the afternoon match with a 25-20 win over Immaclata and jumped out to a big lead early on the way to a 25-15 win in the second set. They closed it out with another 25-20 decision in the final set.
Liz Newman led the way with nine kills and Zavala once again led the defensive efforts with 15 digs. Sophomore setter
Jamie Morris handed out 50 assists over two matches.
Alvernia returns to the conference schedule hosting Messiah on Tuesday.
