Johns Hopkins University (2-0-1) scored a goal in each half and held off Alvernia University (2-1) for a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Alvernia.
The Crusaders had the first great chance of the game in the 10th minute when freshman
Rocky Elgogari slipped through the Blue Jay defense and blasted a shot on goal, but it was parried away by the Blue Jay keeper.
Both teams battled back and fourth with Hopkins breaking through midway through the half. In the 21st minute Josh Hong was played a through ball over the top of the Crusader defense. He slotted it to Kotaro Mitsuhashi who was open at the top of the box who buried the shot past Crusader keeper
Zach Rider.
Freshman
Devin Wilt had a good chance to equalize in the 33rd minute when he had a free header on net but the Blue Jay keeper again was up to the task.
The Blue Jays struck again in the 56th minute when Nigel Joesph buried a shot from the back post. Â Rob Heuler crossed it to Joesph who was unmarked.
The Crusaders finally broke through in the 86th minute when Alex Martin scored on a free kick from about 25 yards out. The Crusaders were on the front foot the rest of the game but just could not find the equalizing goal.
Rider finished with four saves for the Crusaders while Blue Jay keeper Matt Paris had six in the win.
The Crusaders return to action Sunday when they face Wilkes University at 12 p.m.
