Reading, Pa. (Sept. 6, 2014) - St. Mary's College (Md.) (1-2) saw a 2-0 lead evaporate then got game-winner in the 86th minute of a 3-2 win over Alvernia University (1-3) late Saturday evening in game two of the Crusader Cup Women's Soccer Tournament hosted by Alvernia.
The Seahawks scored twice early in the first half for a 2-0 lead. Morgan Dorset scored in the 14th minute, then six minutes later a shot was cleared off the line by the Alvernia defense only to carom right to Christy Ims who was able to head the ball into the net for an early 2-0 lead.
Alvernia generated four shots in the first half, but St. Mary's keeper Sydney Larkin was up to the task each time.
With just over 24 minutes left in the second half a pop-up thunderstorm poured rain on the field leading to a 2-hour delay.
The Crusaders found the scoring touch 13 minutes after the restart when
Devon Reeves connected on a volley that Larkin deflected, but not enough to keep out of the cage. Three minutes later the Crusaders drew a free kick just outside the box which sophomore
Hannah Mallets executed to perfection to tie the game at 2-2.
With overtime looming, Lexy McCarty collected a free ball at the top of the box, dribbled past a few defenders and ripped a clean shot just under the crossbar for the eventual game-winner.
"Those are the highs and lows of watching a young team," said Alvernia head coach
Bill Bonewitz after a long night of soccer. "When they come together like they can, we have some good offensive potential."
The Crusaders get another crack at that potential in Sunday's consolation.
Larkin finshed with five saves while Alvernia freshman Jess Plunkett totaled seven.
