Reading, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2014) – Alvernia University (2-3) notched two goals late in the first half en route to a 3-2 win over Penn State Altoona (0-4) Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Crusader Cup Women's Soccer Tournament hosted by Alvernia.
The Lions scored first in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Shoshana Mahoney scored in the 14th minute, taking a pass by teammate Rhi Miller to the top of the net, just over the head of goalkeeper
Margaret Burnett.
Alvernia answered within the half, tying the game 1-1 in the 35
th minute. Senior
Jess Bernd picked up her first goal of the season driving to the net off a feed from
Amber Scott. Six minutes later, the Crusaders picked up the go ahead goal off the foot of
Taylor Landis, who used a pass back from
Alexis Benton to claim the 2-1 lead.
The Crusaders added insurance in the second half, scoring within the first five minutes. Landis struck again, this time on a wide open shot set up by a pass across the net by
Shannon Browne.
"We're a young team," said Alvernia head coach
Bill Bonewitz. "After fighting back last night, to come back after going down on the first shot today, they really dug deep. We're learning how to win"

Margaret Burnett had five saves on the day while Alvernia had seven shots on goal.
