Strong Second Half Secures Win

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2014) – St. Mary's College of Maryland (2-2) scored late in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater College (3-1) Saturday evening in the championship game of the Crusader Cup Women's Soccer Tournament hosted by Alvernia University.

Bridgewater opened the scoring in the first half to hold a 1-0 lead going into halftime. In the 31st minute, Anna Theisen netted the goal on a feed through the middle by Michelle Viegas. Bridgewater's defense held the Seahawks, not allowing a single shot in the first half.

However, St. Mary's attacked in the second. Just over a minute into the half, the Seahawks capitalized on a corner as Christy Ims tied the game 1-1 off a feed from Caryn Thompson.

The two teams remained scoreless through most of the second half. Lexy McCarty broke the stalemate in the 75th minute, using a header on a corner for the 2-1 lead.

Bridgewater held a 15-2 advantage in shots and a 7-4 lead in corner kicks.  St. Mary's keeper Sydney Larkin had eight saves on the day.
