Owings Mill, Md. (Jan. 10, 2015) - Alvernia University (6-6, 2-3) trailed by a point with just under seven minutes to play and finished the game on a 21-8 run to finish off a 66-54 win over Stevenson University (9-5, 2-3) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at Stevenson.
Chuck Cooper and
Mike Miller both hit big 3s for the Crusaders during the run, and
Lamont Clark scored seven of his game-high 23 during the game-ending run.
Clark hit a pair of free throws on back-to-back possessions for the Crusaders to give them a three point lead then Miller hit a 3 against pressure to double the lead, and Cooper pushed it to seven points, 55-48 with a deep 3 from the right elbow. Cooper picked off a pass on defense on the next possession and hit
Harrison Deyo on the break for a dunk and a nine point lead.
The lead remained seven or more the rest of the way with the Crusaders hitting 5-of-7 free throws over the final 90 seconds.
Deyo finished with 14 points and Cooper added 11. Stevenson had a pair of players reach double figures led by Erik Fisher who scored 19.
Stevenson held an eight point lead, 26-18, with four minutes left in the first half, but the Crusaders scored nine of the last 11 points of the half including a buzzer-beating 3 from
Alex Shippen that sent the Crusaders to the break down 28-27.
Alvernia scored the first eight points of the second half for a 35-28 lead. Stevenson battled back to tie the game at 39-all then took a 46-45 lead on a Darius Walker layup.
Alvernia returns home to face Penn State-Berks on Monday.
