Reading, Pa. (Jan 28, 2015) – Arcadia University (10-9, 6-4) held off the Crusaders late run in the second half to capture a 69-66 victory over Alvernia University (6-12, 2-8) Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Jack McCloskey Court.
A jumper by Annie Walker at 17:03 sparked a steady run as she combined with
Mya Lobb to cut a 42-32 Knight lead down to six. After a made foul shot by Arcadia,
Chelsea Ebersole drained a three to close the gap to 43-39. Ebersole struck again after an exchange of jumpers, bringing the Crusaders within two.
Arcadia's Imani Alston separated the squads 47-43, but Yoh had other plans landing a jumper and a free throw to come within one.
Tyra Roberts squared things away for the only tie of the game, responding to an Arcadia three with back to back jump shots to lock the game 50-50 with seven minutes left of play.
However, the Crusaders were unable to swing the game in their favor. Both teams exchanged shots throughout the remainder of the half, with Alvernia coming within one on four different occasions. Down 65-60 with 1:30 left to play, the Crusaders launched their final run. Lobb made both from the line to cut the lead to three, followed by shot from
Stevie Fortna to make it 65-64.
Alvernia sent Arcadia's Maureen Fiocca to the line, who made both clutch shots to extend the Knight's lead 67-64. With 15 second left, Yoh took the ball the length of the court, making her layup and drawing the foul for the three-point play. Yoh's foul shot was just off, keeping Alvernia behind 67-66. Fiocca would again draw the foul from the Crusaders, landing both shots from the line and sealing the Knight 69-66.
Alvernia matched up well with the Knights to open the first half, down 15-12 with just under 13 minutes left in the half. Arcadia created some offense near the halfway mark, stringing together seven unanswered points to pull ahead 22-12. The Crusaders would chip away and put together their best run of the half with seven minutes left as Ebersole, Wolff, and Fortna combined for eight consecutive points. Alvernia would end the half trailing 30-35.
Yoh was the high scorer for Alvernia on the night, totaling 16 points on a 7-for-10 performance from the field. Roberts was close behind Yoh with 14 points, picking up 10 boards.
