Reading, Pa (October 13, 2015) – Alvernia University (3-10-1, 1-2) captured its first conference win of the season against crosstown rival Albright College (7-5-2, 3-1) with a 2-1 victory in women's soccer action Tuesday evening at Alvernia University.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the 32
nd minute off a
Taylor Smith goal, which was set up by a free kick taken by Alvernia's
Bailey Stover. After Stover took the kick, Smith connected with the ball and fired into the goal to put the Crusaders on the board.
Just under eight minutes later, Alvernia's
Melissa Stahl extended the Crusader's lead with a goal of her own. Stahl weaved around multiple defenders, and ripped an opposite foot shot from about twenty yards out. The shot curved into the right corner of the goal, putting Alvernia up 2-0.
The Crusaders held this lead into halftime.
Albright made things interesting in the 86
th minute when Emily Sousa broke away from Alvernia defenders. The Lions lone goal sailed just over the reach of Alvernia goalkeeper Jess Plunkett, to cut the Crusader's lead to 2-1.
A strong defensive effort in the final minutes secured Alvernia's first conference win of the season, dropping Albright to 3-1 in the MAC Commonwealth.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday for a homecoming weekend match, hosting Lycoming College in another conference matchup at 3:00pm.
