Liberto Leads Crusaders to 3-2 Overtime Victory

Scranton, Pa. (Oct. 15, 2015) - Summer Liberto sealed a win for Alvernia University (8-5) as she netted the game winner in overtime against Marywood University (6-6) Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.

Just two minutes into overtime, the Crusaders capitalized on a corner opportunity. On the insert, Alvernia executed perfect zig-zag passing to get the ball to Margaret Wentzel. Wentzel drove a shot to the left side of the cage, which Liberto tipped up and in for her second of the day and the 3-2 victory.

Liberto was also the source that led the Crusaders into overtime, ripping the equalizer with just under 18 minutes left in regulation. Down 2-1 in the second half, Liberto and Wentzel paired up for their first combo of the day. Wentzel cleared the way, dribbling through the Pacers defense and driving the ball to the left post. Liberto was ready, deflecting the drive into the goal.

Marywood generated all its scoring in the first half, opening the day with its first goal in under three minutes for the 1-0 lead.

Alvernia dominated the offense over the next six minutes and broke through in the 18-minute mark. Hailey Knowlton delivered a pass across mid circle to Wentzel, who scored her lone goal of the night to bring things to a 1-1 lock.

The Pacers gathered steam toward the end of the half, scoring again at the 30-minute mark to take the 2-1 margin in the half.

The Crusaders finished the day ahead in all offensive categories, holding a 20-6 advantage in shots and 7-2 advantage in corners.

Rebecca Brosious collected the win in goal, gathering three saves.

The Crusaders take to the turf again on Saturday, hosting Hood College on Alvernia's home turf. Saturday marks Alvernia's homecoming, as well as field hockey's Play for the Cure game, which honors those with Breast Cancer and raises money for the cause.
