Chester, Pa. (Oct. 21, 2015) - Widener University (13-12, 3-3) defeated Alvernia University (12-13, 3-3) by a 3-0 final Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth Women's Volleyball action at Widener.
The Pride opened up a 4-0 lead to start the first set and held a comfortable lead most of the way in a 25-17 win.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second set, Alvernia kept coming back pulling within a point on a few occasions and finally put together four straight points to take a 21-20 lead. Widener answerd back wtih three straight points for a 23-20 lead on its way to a 25-22 win in the second set.
Alvernia started the third set with a point and built a 6-2 lead. Widener needed a run of four straight points for an 11-10 lead, but three striaght from the Crusaders put the guests up 13-11. The Crusaders stayed in front and led 23-20 before Widener ran off four straight to have match point at 24-23. Alvernia was able to hold off the finish on a kill from
Emily Smith that tied the set at 24-all, but Widener finished off a 26-24 win with back-to-back kills.
Smith led the Crusaders with 11 kills. Krissy Sillio paced the defense with 12 digs.
Alvernia falls into a tie with Widener for fourth place. Both teams need just one more win out of their final two matches to secure a playoff spot.
Alvernia continues the season at the Salisbury Tri-match this Saturday and will wrap up the MAC Commonwealth schedule at Stevenson next Tuesday and home vs Hood next Thursday.
