Owings Mill, Md. (Oct. 24, 2015) - Junior
Alexis Krall scored five minutes into overtime assisted by
Melanie Lowry to lead Alvernia University (10-6, 3-3) to a 4-3 win over Stevenson University (10-8, 4-2) Saturday evening at Stevenson.
The Crusaders were down 1-0 and 3-2, but were able to tie the game both times--the second on the 22nd goal of the season from junior
Margaret Wentzel with just over 15 minutes left in regulation.
Krall scored the Crusaders' first goal of the game in the 27th minute to tie the score at 1-1, and
Summer Liberto scored two minutes later to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead late in the first half.
Stevenson scored with under three minutes left in the first half to tie the score at 2-2 then scored again almost immediately to start the second half for a 3-2 lead.
The Mustangs held the one-goal lead for better than 17 minutes until
Natalie Messaros set up Wentzel to tie the score.
Stevenson earned four penalty corners in the final 14 minutes of regulation, but couldn't generate a shot on net.
Alvernia goalie Rebecca Brosius made two saves in the first five minutes of the overtime period and Wentzel hit the post on a shot a minute before Krall ended the game.
The Crusaders jump into a tie with Albright College for fourth place in the MAC Commonwealth and have what amounts to a playoff game with the Lions next Tuesday at Alvernia. A win in the game and the Crusaders could climb as high as third place in the standings if Stevenson were to lost to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday.
