Crusaders Outlast Cougars In OT, 3-2

Wentzel Scores Two For Alvernia

Reading, Pa (Oct. 29, 2015) - Junior Margaret Wentzel netted two goals, including the game-winner, to help lead the Alvernia University (11-7) to a 3-2 overtime victory against the Cougars of Misericordia (8-10) in non-conference Field Hockey action Thursday evening at Alvernia.

The Crusaders scored first, with Andrea Wysocki scoring the lone goal of the half in the 18th minute. Wysocki broke away from the Misericordia defenders, beat the Cougar goalie, and put one into the back of the net.

Misericordia was unable to match the goal before the half, and the game was 1-0 entering halftime.

Coming out of the break, Alvernia was able to extend its lead in the 42nd minute when Margaret Wentzel connected with the back of the net. The ball, coming into play off of a Summer Liberto corner, bounced off the sticks of several players before settling down enough for Melanie Lowry to pass the ball into Wentzel. Wentzel was then able to take a clean shot on goal to put the Crusaders up 2-0.

Misericordia put on a solid defensive showing, especially after surviving a five-minute, man-up onslaught by the Crusader offense that started in the 50th minute after Misericordia's Colby Eldrige recieved a yellow card. In those five minutes, Alvernia had four corner opportunities and seven shots. Misericordia did not allow one to go past its goalie, Angela Pasquini, and the game remained 2-0.

The Cougars were able to get within one in the 61st minute when they capitalized on a man-up opportunity of their own, and Kailey Vogl put one past Rebecca Brosious to put the game at 2-1.

The game looked to finish with that score; however, a rule that allows play to continue on a corner opportunity, even after time expires, sent the game into overtime.  The Cougars took advantage of this rule and sent the game into overtime off of a goal by Lindsay Hischak.

Eight minutes into overtime, Wentzel dribbled past multiple defenders and took a quick shot on goal. For the 25th time this season, Wentzel was able to fire a shot past the goalie, and the Crusaders captured their second overtime win of the season.

Alvernia's Brosious finished the game with two saves, and Pasquini finished with six.

The Crusaders finish the season at Cabrini and await a possible ECAC bid, which will be announced November 9th.
