Allentown, Pa. (Nov. 20, 2015) - Hartwick College (1-1) shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half and grabbed a 48-21 advantage on the boards in an 80-64 win over Alvernia University (3-1) Friday afternoon in game one of the Scotty Wood Memorial Men's Basketball Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College.
Hartwick advances to the championship game and will face the winner of Muhlenberg vs City College of New York on Saturday at 8:00. Alvernia will be in the consolation game Saturday at 3:00.
Alvernia opened up an 11-5 lead early, but Hartwick answered with five 3s in a 17-3 run that put the Hawks up 22-14 midway through the first half.
The Crusaders came back to tie the score on three different occasions in the last five minutes of the half and Hartwick got a 3-point play to take a 36-33 lead into the break.
The Hawks knocked down a 3 on their opening possession of the second half and followed with a second-chance bucket as they built a 12-point lead, 50-38 with 16 minutes left in the game.
Alvernia pulled back to within five points, 56-51 on a
George Sapp jumper with 10:11 to play, but back-to-back 3s from the Hawks pushed the lead back to double digits and it remained comfortable the rest of the way.
Hartwick went 12-of-30 from the 3-point arc and pulled down 17 offensive rebounds leading to 13 second-chance points. Four players reached double figures for the Hawks led by 17 apiece from Joey Lufkin and Trevor Norton. Alvernia got a game-high 20 from
Charles Cooper.
