Mason Etier made a save at the final horn to give Alvernia University (2-3) and 8-7 win over Immaculata University (0-3) Wednesday afternoon at Immaculata.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, but saw that vanish when the Mighty Macs posted all three goals in the second quarter for a 4-3 lead at the break. Alvernia turned the same trick in the third taking the quarter 3-0 and a establishing a 6-4 lead.
Alvernia scored two of the first three goals in the fourth for an 8-5 lead with 8:55 to play. Immaculata scored with just over seven minutes to go then pulled within a goal with just under three to play.
Alvernia controled the ball after the final Immaculata goal until a turnover with under a minute left gave the Mighty Macs a chance. Immaculata drew a penalty with 12 seconds to play and worked the man advantage for a shot on goal at the final buzzer, but Etier swept it aside for his second win of the season.
Brian Schay scored twice for the Crusaders and Tyler Black led the Mighty Macs with two scores. Etier finished with a dozen saves, including four in the final period.
Alvernia returns home to host Alfred State on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
