Cameron Coons went 5-for-5 at the plate and tied the single game runs record with six Wednesday afternoon leading Alvernia University (13-7) to a 25-8 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College (3-7) in non-conference baseball action at Angelica.
Coons blasted one of three home runs for the Crusaders leading off the sixth inning with a solo shot.
GMC scored a pair of runs in the top half of the first, but Alvernia quickly took the lead when
Ben Sawyer launched a 3-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Crusaders scored five runs in the first inning and added crooked numbers three more times in the game tacking on three runs in the third, seven in the fourth, four in the fifth, and five more in the eighth.
Dillon Dunne was the beneficiary of all the run support earning the win after allowing just the two first inning runs.
Six batters had multi hit games on the day.Â
Brok Martin was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs, Saywer,
Richie Ricciardi, and
Dan George were all 2-for-3 on the day before leaving for replacements midway through. Sawyer finished with five RBIs while Ricciardi and George had three apiece.
Coons matched the school record of six runs held by Hall of Famer Todd Meyer ('02) who drove scored six and drove in a school-record 12 runs while hitting the home run cycle in a win over Wilmington College.
Alvernia returns to the conference schedule Thursday hosting a make up doubleheader with Stevenson University.
