Reading, Pa. (Apr. 15, 2015) - Seventh-ranked Stevenson University (10-4, 5-0) scored 13 goals in the second inning on its way to a 27-2 win over Alvernia University (3-11, 0-6) Wednesday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's lacrosse action at Alvernia.
The Crusaders nearly got the first goal of the game just over a minute into play when freshman goalie
Mason Etier took a shot from near midfield with the Mustangs' goalie staying close to the Alvernia attack on the clear nearly 30 feet out of the crease, but the shot just missed wide to the right.
Stevenson scored a minute later on a man-advantage and made it 2-0 with a goal at 10:25 of the first. Alvernia sophomore
Thomas Warwick had a chance to tally for the Crusaders midway through the first quarter, but his rip from in front of the cage was kicked away by a brilliant kick save from Mustangs' starting goalie Connor Skeen.
Stevenson scored twice more in the first quarter for a 4-0 lead at the first intermission then added 13 goals in the second quarter for a 17-0 lead at halftime.
Alvernia broke the shutout with just over two minutes left in the game. Freshman
Colin Rothweiler connected from right in front of the Mustangs' cage slipping a shot into the netting in the lower left corner. The Crusaders made it two straight goals when Ben Manning scored with 54 seconds to play.
Alvernia continues the conference schedule hosting Messiah College on Tuesday.
