Reading, Pa. (Apr. 18, 2015) - Alvernia University (14-12, 6-8) split games with cross-town rival Albright College (15-9, 5-8), falling 3-1 in game one before taking game two 4-2.
In game one, Albright jumped on the board first, going ahead 2-0 in the top of the second.
Alvernia responded in the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit in half.
Brianna DePriest jump started the Crusader offense, opening the inning with a lead off triple. After a
Shannon Grim walk,
Aly Shilling plated DePriest on a ball to right to bring Alvernia within one at 2-1. The Crusaders had runners on second and third, but were unable to convert another run.
Albright tacked on one more run in the fourth, pulling ahead 3-1.
The Crusaders put runners on in the fourth and fifth innings, but were unable to cross the plate.
In the nightcap, Alvernia took an early lead, pulling ahead 3-0 in the first. DePriest and
Felicia McKenna partnered for back-to-back singles and DePriest would come around to score on an RBI single by Shilling. The Crusaders would end up plating McKenna and Shilling on an error by the Lions off the bat of
Amanda Turner.
The Lions threatened to score in the second and third innings, but Alvernia's defense was too sharp. In the second, a passed ball flip from
Aly Shilling to pitcher
Brianna Fisher downed an Albright runner at the plate. Another Lion runner was out at home in the third, this time on a throw by left fielder
Mckenzie Miessau.
Albright eventually pushed across two runs in the fourth.
The Crusaders added a buffer in the fifth, stringing together hits for another run.
Brianna Kuhn reached on a one out single, and moved up on a single by DePriest. Grim delivered the two-out shot, plating Kuhn on a single to right for the 4-2 lead and the win.
Fisher and
Taylor Fouracre paired up in the circle game two, collecting the win and the save respectively.
Alvernia has a quick turn around, traveling to Stockton tomorrow for a non-conference double header at noon.
