Reading, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2015) - Lynchburg College (4-0) scored the golden goal two minute into overtime to capture a 3-2 win over Alvernia University (2-2) Saturday afternoon in rainy conditions at Alvernia.
Both teams proved the strength of their defenses in the first half, taking a 0-0 matchup into halftime.
Alvernia, who fired off three shots in the final minutes of the first half, got on the board first in the second half as
Summer Liberto took the pass from
Paige Epler and made the most of an open shot opportunity in front of the net to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg, who entered the match-up undefeated, brought things to a 1-1 tie less than a minute later on a penalty stroke.
The Hornets kept their momentum going, scoring again in the 41
st minute on a rebound shot for the 2-1 advantage.
The Crusaders kept the pressure on and brought things back to a tie in the 60
th minute.
Natalie Messaros drove a ground ball towards the net, which
Hailey Knowlton redirected to the back of the goal to square the game at 2-2.
Both teams made shot attempts before the end of regulation, but neither team was able to convert, forcing a 7-vs-7 overtime.
Just under two minutes into overtime, Lynchburg's offense was able to pull past the Crusaders defense, putting away the game winner.
The Crusaders held the offensive advantage on the day, leading by two in shots and shots on goal at 13-11 and 9-7 respectively. Alvernia also doubled the Hornets corner opportunities, collecting 12 corner chances.
Alvernia will take to the road for a four-game stint, returning home on September 30
th for a non-conference matchup against Delaware Valley at 7:00 pm.
