Crusaders Notch A Pair Of Shutouts In Home Tri-Match

Wesley Racks Up 15 Kills, Hits .591

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 3 Reading, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2015) - Alvernia University (4-4) evened up it's season record with a pair of shutout victories at a home tri-match Saturday over Penn State-Berks (1-5) and Trinity (D.C.) (0-4).

Senior middle Taylor Wesley finished the day with 15 kills and hit .591.  Three other Crusaders reached double digits in kills--Laura Wachowicz (14), Grace Butow (11), and Emily Smith (10).  Lauryn Snyder finished with 34 assists and six aces, and Abby O'Donnell had 31 kills and three aces.  Senior Krissy Silio led the defensive effort with 19 digs.

MATCH ONE
Alvernia defeated Penn State-Berks 26-24, 25-18, 25-22.  Smith had 10 kills and 15 digs to lead the Crusaders in match one--a 3-0 win over Penn State-Berks.  Snyder served five straight points for the Crusaders to turn a 15-12 deficit into a 17-15 lead.  Berks came up with a big block at the first set point to force a 24-all tie then Brittany Lantz and Smith hammered down back-to-back kills to win the set.

Snyder put together another service run in the second set to put the Crusaders up 13-7 and the Crusaders held a comfortable lead the rest of the way with Snyder closing the set with back-to-back aces.

Berks opened up a 21-19 lead in the third set on a service ace from Megan DeAbreu, but Wachowicz and Alex Stroia scored consecutive kills to level the match at 21-all.  The teams traded points on the next two serves then Stroia served out the match aided by a Smith kill and a pair of errors from the Lions.

MATCH TWO
Penn State-Berks defeated Trinity (D.C.) 25-4, 25-14, 25-11.

MATCH THREE
Alvernia defeated Trinity (D.C.) 25-9, 25-5, 25-3.  The Crusaders hit .525 as a team.  Butow hit .588 in the match with 11 kills and an error on 17 attempts.  Stroia closed the match scoring seven straight points on her serve.  Silio ran off another run of seven straight points to end the second set and McKenna Achenbach served 17 straight points in the third set.

Alvernia continues the season Tuesday at Lebanon Valley.
