Reading, Pa. (Sept. 13, 2015) - Alvernia University (2-4) netted two goals per half to capture a 4-2 victory over Penn State Altoona (0-4) Sunday afternoon at Alvernia.
The Crusaders came out aggressive, posting their first goal of the day less than three minutes into play. Freshman
Kayla McNamee dribbled past her defender and launched a shot from the top of the 18 to the left of the net, just over the diving keeper for the 1-0 lead.
McNamee was not done though, notching her second goal in the 20
th minute.
Bailey Stover created a breakaway for the Crusaders down the left side of the field, opening the middle for McNamee. McNamee then used the thru ball from Stover to take on Lions goalie Mackenzie Strubhar, beating her to the back left corner to pull ahead 2-0.
Penn State Altoona netted its first goal at the 50 minute mark, coming out on the positive end of a scuffle in front of the net, cutting the Crusaders lead in half 2-1.
Alvernia reestablished its two goal lead midway through the second half as
Hannah Mallets picked up her first goal of the season by booting in a deflection off a Lions defender.
The Crusaders tacked on another goal with just over 18 minutes left in regulation as Alvernia capitalized on another breakaway opportunity. Stover placed another great feed, this time to
Eden Nafziger who delivered a strike from far left to find the inside of the goal and a 4-1 margin.
The Lions would collect another goal with five minutes remaining. On a Crusaders clear attempt in front of an open goal, the kick deflected off the Lions' Kirsty Moir and made its way inside the right post to bring Penn State within two.
Alvernia defense stayed strong through the remainder of the game, allowing only one more shot attempt from the Lions before the 90
th minute.
Three Crusaders collected time in goal, led by
Jessica Plunkett with 45 minutes of play. Plunkett was solid through the first half, wrangling 7 saves.
Alvernia continues its home stretch of games on Wednesday, hosting Dickinson College at 7:00 pm.
