Grantham, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2015) - Messiah College (4-4, 1-0) scored three straight goals for a 3-1 win over Alvernia University (4-4, 0-1) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey action at Messiah.
Alvernia grabbed a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game when junior
Margaret Wentzel carried the ball through the defense and ripped a shot inside the far post for her 10th goal of the season.
Messiah answered quickly with the equalizer five minutes later. Alvernia keeper
Rebecca Brosious made an initial save on a high shot from near the top of the circle and after a second attempt was blocked in front, Messiah's Carissa Gehman chipped a ball past Brosious for a 1-1 score.
The offenses settled down for the final 30 minutes of the half and the score remained knotted into the halftime break.
Messiah took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute then added insurance two minutes later.
Brosious finished with four saves for the Crusaders.
Alvernia returns home for a three game stretch starting with a non-conference match against Delaware Valley on Wednesday.
