Lancaster, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2015) - No. 12 Franklin & Marshall (3-0) scored on a penalty kick two minutes into overtime for a 1-0 win over Alvernia University (1-1-1) in men's soccer action Saturday evening on day two of the Scrapyard Classic.
The Diplomats advanced the ball into their offensive box early in the overtime period, and Alvernia was whistled for a foul on a tackle in the box resulting in the penalty kick.
Alvernia, which played to a 0-0 draw vs Eastern on Friday, placed three players on the All-Tournament Team--sophomore defender
Chris Guth, senior midfielder
Andrew Baylor, and sophomore goalie
Zach Rider.
F&M took seven shots in the first half of the game, but couldn't put any of them on net. The Dips finally found the target three times on eight shots in the second, but Rider was up to the challenge each time. The Alvernia offense finally generated some chances in the second half putting a pair of shots on net, but F&M goalie Trevor Britton turned away both.
Alvernia opens the home schedule on Wednesday hosting York College for a 7:00 p.m. game.
