Reading, Pa. (Jan. 13, 2016) - Alvernia University (7-8, 2-4) used a strong second quarter to propel it to a 56-44 victory over Arcadia University (7-8, 2-4) Wednesday evening in MAC Commonwealth Conference Women's Basketball action on Jack McCloskey Court.
Trailing 12-9 after the first quarter,
Tyra Roberts made a short jumper to bring Alvernia within one.
Jenna Wolff then turned the tide, putting away a pair from the line to give the Crusaders their first and final lead of the night at 13-12. Alvernia continued to extend its margin, mixing jumpers by Wolff and
Kim Whelan with five made free throws to pull ahead 22-14.
Wolff bookended the run with a layup with three minutes left in the quarter. Down 24-14, the Knights' Dominique Hassinger drained a pair of jumpers to cut the Alvernia lead to 24-18 going into halftime.
Arcadia battled with Alvernia through the third period, just outscoring the Crusaders 15-13 to cut the lead to four at 37-33. Roberts generated most of Alvernia's scoring throughout the quarter, netting 8 points in the paint.
The Crusaders hit another run in the final quarter, solidifying the win. Up 43-37, Roberts and
Stevie Fortna made back to back jumpers before
Logan Focht drained her lone 3 on the evening.
Miranda Hoover added two from the line to give Alvernia its largest advantage, up 15 at 52-37.
The Knight tried to knock the deficit into single digits, but a
Chelsea Ebersole 3 with 32 second left reestablished a 13-point margin at 56- 43.
Roberts had another stellar game for Alvernia, notching her sixth double-double of the season, with three in MAC Commonwealth matchups. She led the team with 19 points and 14 boards. Wolff and Fortna were also at the top of Alvernia's scoring, each adding 9 points.
The Knights were led by Addy Crenny, who mirrored Roberts's performance. Arcadia had two other players in double digits.
The Crusaders take to McCloskey court again this week, hosting Stevenson University in another MAC Commonwealth contest Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
