Second Half Spurt Leads Stockton To 62-56 Win Over Alvernia

Marshall Leads Crusaders With 18

Center Valley, Pa. (Jan. 2, 2016) - Stockton University (9-2) put together a 12-2 run late in the second half to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead then made enough free throws down the stretch to hold of Alvernia University (5-6) in a 62-56 win Saturday afternoon in day one action of the Al Senavitis Memorial Men's Basketball Tournament at DeSales University.

The Ospreys scored on a layup, a jumper, a 3-point play, and a 3 over a two minutes span while the Crusaders managed just a pair of free throws and committed a pair of turnovers during the decisive stretch.

Alvernia had the deficit down to five points on three occasions in the final 90 seconds, but couldn't get any closer.  The Crusaders will play DeSales in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.  Stockton will face Berkeley (N.J.) in the championship game at 4:00.

Marquis Marshall led the Crusaders with 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting.  Alvernia shot 40 percent from the floor for the game and just 27 percent from the arc hitting seven shots on 26 attempts.  The Crusaders were limited to just five free throw attempts on the game--a season low and more than 20 attempts below their average coming into Saturday's game.

Charles Cooper reached double figures for the Crusaders with 14, George Sapp scored 12, and Alex Shippen added 10.  Stockton put three players in double figures led by Jaymere Hadden and Armin Cane who scored 14 apiece.
