Reading, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2016) - Margaret Wentzel netted her 91st career goal a minute into overtime to lift Alvernia University (17-1, 6-1) to a 4-3 victory over cross-town rival Albright College (11-5, 3-4) Thursday evening in MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey action.
Less than a minute into overtime, the Crusaders capitalized on a corner opportunity. On the insert from
Erica Groves, Wentzel carried the ball to five yards out, where she blasted the game winner.
Alvernia appeared to have the game won in regulation, carrying a 3-2 margin up to the 70th minute. However, Albright managed to work a corner in the closing second, allowing play to continue. The Lions made the most of the allowance, netting the equalizer on their third corner after time had expired.
Alvernia claimed the 3-2 advantage in the 44th minute. With the Crusaders executing their 8th corner play of the game, Wentzel took the input from
Andrea Wysocki and drove the ball towards the net.
Alexis Krall was ready, tipping Wentzel's drive past Albright goalie Aileen Taylor for Alvernia's first lead of the game.
The two squads exchanged a pair of goals in the first half. The Lions jumped on the board first, netting the 1-0 go ahead in the third minute. Eight minutes later, Wentzel partnered with
Malorie McCoy to lock the game 1-1. Wentzel pushed a pass to McCoy on the left side, who recorded her 10th goal of the season.
Albright took its second lead in the 27th minute, but the Crusaders quickly responded as Wentzel took the rebound off a Groves' shot and drained her first of the day to square the game 2-2.
With tonight's goals, Wentzel sits just two scores shy of tying the all-time career goals record.

The Crusaders take to the turf again on Saturday, hosting Cabrini College in their final regular season contest. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
