Margaret Wentzel scored two goals and three assists and broke both the single season and career assist records as #18 Alvernia University (12-0, 3-0) remained undefeated with an 8-0 win at Hood College (3-8, 0-3) Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth Field Hockey action at Hood.
Wentzel assisted three goals in a row for the Crusaders then scored a pair. She knotched her 13th assist of the season surpassing the former record of 11 held by Nicole Hampton ('96) and Becky Macchione ('06), and moved to 34 assists for her career moving one ahead of Megan Novogratz ('06) who held the previous mark at 33. Wentzel's two goals moved her to 12 for the season and 85 for her career, just eight short of Macchione's school-record of 93.
Alvernia opened the scoring in Saturday's win with a goal from
Andrea Wysocki in the fourth minute then move to a 2-0 advantage when
Taylor Dorrin scored in the 20th minute.
The Crusaders held a 2-0 advantage at halftime then exploded for six goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half. Wentzel assisted Wysocki for her second of the game then handed out helpers to
Erica Groves and Dorrin. The senior forward then scored two of her own, the first one assisted by Groves, and the Crusaders closed out the scoring in the 60th minute when
Andrea Zimmerman set up
Michaela Burke.
Alvernia rotated three goalies through the cage, but the defense kept the Hood offense from registering a shot.
Alvernia returns to Reading for a three-game homestand that starts with Marywood University on Monday, Gettysburg College on Wednesday, before an important conference match-up with Stevenson University next Saturday.
