Glenside, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2016) - Arcadia University (9-13, 4-9) overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to claim a 79-77 victory over Alvernia University (8-15, 3-11) in MAC Commonwealth Women's Basketball action Wednesday evening at Arcadia's Alumni Gymnasium.
The Crusaders held a dominant lead at the end of the first quarter with a 30-17 advantage. After falling behind by five at 7-2,
Olivia Andrefski began her career night with a free throw and her first from behind the arc to help lift Alvernia onto the positive end at 9-7. The two squads exchanged buckets up to 15-13 until the Crusaders hit a nine point run including a pair of 3s from Andrefski and
Jenna Wolff. A Knights free-throw halted the run at 25-10, but
Chelsea Ebersole had the final word after a swap of jumpers with a 3-pointer.
Alvernia continued to have the hot hand beyond the arc through the second quarter as Ebersole, Andrefski and Wolff put away a trio of 3s to extend the lead 39-25. Arcadia lessened the margin 39-30, but a three-point play by
Logan Focht pushed the lead 42-30. The Knights cut into the advantage again, coming within seven, but an Andrefski layup and five points by Wolff put Alvernia up 49-35 at the half.
The Crusaders continued their solid shooting to open the third quarter, holding a 17-point margin on four different occasions. Arcadia found a rhythm with three minute left in the quarter, cutting the lead to 65-57 entering the final quarter.
The Knights chipped away even more in the fourth, closing the gap to four at 71-67 with six minute left. Ebersole and Andrefski combined for a jumper and pair from the line to answer Arcadia buckets and maintain a 75-70 lead, yet the Knights responded with a set of layups and two from the line to go ahead 76-75.
Wolff reclaimed the lead for the Crusaders with a layup at minute and half left, but Arcadia's Addy Crenny mirrored Wolff's layup to tilt the margin in the Knights favor 78-77.
Arcadia tacked on a free throw with 14 seconds left to seal the win.
Andrefski had a career high 20 points, going 7-13 from the floor and 3-7 from 3-point range. Ebersole had a team and season high 23 points, shooting 7-11 from the field and 5-5 from the line.
The Crusaders will return home on Tuesday, hosting cross-town rival Albright College for Senior Night. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
